Our Hygienic and Preventative Dental Services

Dental Health Exam and Cleaning

At Nurture Dental Health, we create a personalized oral health care plan that meets your unique dental needs. We recommend that you schedule a visit at least twice a year for dental checkups and thorough teeth cleanings. During your appointment, we will not only evaluate your oral health, answer questions, and recommend improvements or changes, but will also strive to build a lasting relationship with you based on trust and respect.

Deep Cleaning

Scaling and root planning, or as it is commonly called, a deep cleaning, is a simple and common procedure to remove tartar and rough spots below your gum line.

Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical treatment of periodontal disease. The purpose of the treatment is to remove bacterial plaque and calculus that release toxins from around teeth and under the gum line, which is causing bone loss. The goal is to produce clean, healthy teeth and roots, which will promote healing of the inflammation and infection that causes gum disease.

Sealants

A dental sealant is a simple, highly effective procedure to prevent decay on the biting surfaces of your chewing teeth. It is easy to apply and takes only a few minutes to seal each tooth. During the procedure, a tooth-colored acrylic “coating” is painted onto the surface of the tooth. As a dental sealant seals the deep grooves, it acts as a barrier and protects your enamel from plaque and acids.

It protects the depressions and grooves of your teeth from food particles and plaque. Sealants last for several years before a reapplication is needed and can withstand the force of normal chewing. Sealants can benefit both children and adults.

Fluoride Treatment

Ingested fluoride found in water and other sources helps in the development of strong, healthy tooth enamel. However, when your tooth erupts from the gum line, topical fluoride is required to keep your tooth strong and healthy. Although fluoride is present in toothpastes and mouthwashes, we may recommend topical fluoride treatments to strengthen enamel and reduce the risk for tooth decay in younger patients.

Oral Cancer Screening

Early diagnosis is the best way to decrease the annual number of oral cancer-related deaths. Hence, it is important for dentists and physicians to screen for early signs of this disease. At Nurture Dental Health, we use the Identafi oral cancer screening system. This screening system helps us diagnose oral cancer in the earliest stages.

Emergency or Limited Exams

At Nurture Dental Health PC, we not only offer comprehensive dental care for families, children, and adults but also specialty services such as oral and maxillofacial surgery. Same-day appointments are available for dental consultations, cleanings, and treatment.

Retainers to Replace Your Old or Worn out Retainers

Invisalign is a discreet and incredibly effective way to straighten your teeth and improve your smile. Invisalign straightens your teeth using clear aligners, which gradually shift your teeth into the desired position. There are no metal wires, brackets or braces. As these clear aligners are removable, you won’t have problems eating, brushing, or flossing.

Dental problems Invisalign can treat:

• Crooked teeth
• Crowded teeth
• Bite problems, including uneven bites, over bites, and under bites
• Poorly spaced teeth

Properly aligned teeth not only enhances your appearance and self-esteem but also make brushing and flossing easier. Hence, reducing plaque and bacteria build up. Eventually, this improves your overall oral health, jaw function, speech, and decreases dental traumas.

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)

We also offer SDF treatments to assist in halting tooth decay in very young patients. Not every patient is a candidate for an SDF. Schedule an appointment with us, and we can determine if SDF is the right choice for you.

An FDA-approved topical solution, Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a simple and noninvasive way to treat and prevent dental caries. It also reduces tooth sensitivity. Silver Diamine Fluoride is made with two acting ingredients – silver component and fluoride.
The silver component of this topical solution is an anti-microbial agent that kills bacteria and prevents the formation of new biofilm. Fluoride, on the other hand, prevents further demineralization (softening) of your tooth structure.

Silver Diamine Fluoride does not eliminate the need for restorative dentistry (fillings, crown, etc.) to repair tooth function or aesthetics. It is, however, effective at preventing further tooth decay.

Silver Diamine Fluoride treats carious lesions (cavities) and can be done in the comfort of our well-equipped dental office.
  1. Your teeth are brushed without toothpaste and rinsed well.
  2. We will isolate your carious teeth, keep them dry, and remove excess debris.
  3. A micro brush is dipped in a drop of SDF and placed on the lesions for two minutes.
  4. The decayed area will stain black.
  5. After removing excess SDF, you are expected to not eat or drink for an hour.

Fluoride Varnish

Varnish is a gel paste that is brushed onto the surface of the teeth. It dries and hardens quickly, adhering to the teeth for several hours. Unlike traditional fluoride trays, varnish is safe to swallow because very little is used and it chips off the teeth over a period of time.

What to Expect After Varnish

Initially, the varnish is very sticky which helps it firmly adhere to the teeth. It may get on your lips and cheek but can be easily taken off. The varnish dries quickly and as you rub your tongue across your teeth, you should feel a coating of the varnish. You should also be able to see a thin coating of the varnish on the surface of your teeth.

Aftercare Instructions

The treatment period for fluoride varnish is 4-6 hours. Immediately after treatment, to maximum benefit, please adhere to following instructions:
• Do not brush or floss for at least 6 hours
• Eat only soft foods for at least 2 hours
• Do not consume hot drinks, alcohol, including mouth rinse, or crunchy foods for at least 6 hours

If you wish, you may opt to resume normal hygiene the day after treatment or the night of. Should you want to remove any excess varnish, vigorously brush and floss your teeth. Your teeth will look and feel the same as they did before the treatment.

Custom Fluoride Trays for patients at High Risk for Decay

Learn how to use Custom Fluoride Trays:

Before using your custom fluoride trays, it is important to brush your teeth thoroughly with a soft toothbrush and regular toothpaste. Floss teeth by sliding the floss up and down each side of each tooth in a "C" shape to hug the contours of each tooth. Food and plaque can prevent fluoride from reaching the surface of your tooth, it is important to remove food and plaque from between teeth before you use fluoride.

Add a thin ribbon of the fluoride gel into each upper and lower fluoride tray so that each tooth space has some fluoride. You can either use 0.4% stannous fluoride (Gel Kam), 1.1% sodium fluoride (Prevident 5000), or MI Paste. By using a cotton-tipped applicator, finger, or toothbrush, the fluoride can be spread into a thin film that coats the inside of the trays.
Place the trays on the upper and lower teeth and allow them to remain in place for 5 minutes. When the trays are placed, only a small amount of fluoride should come out of the base, otherwise, there may be too much fluoride in the trays.

Remove the trays and thoroughly expectorate (spit out) the residual fluoride after 5 minutes. It is important that you don’t rinse your mouth, drink, or eat for at least 30 minutes after fluoride use.

If you have a history of head or neck radiation as provided during cancer treatment, you can start using fluoride in the custom trays no longer than one week after radiotherapy is completed. You should repeat the treatment daily for the rest of your life. When the mouth is dry, tooth decay can occur in a matter of weeks if the fluoride is not used properly.
