Implant Fixture Placement

When describing single implants, there are generally 3 pieces or parts to the commonly described implant:

  • Implant Fixture
  • Abutment
  • Crown

The Implant Fixture is the man-made root that is placed into the bone to replace the root of the tooth.

The Implant Abutment is generally described as the part that connects the actual crown (or tooth that you chew with) to the implant fixture. There are many types of abutments depending on the placement of the fixture, the anatomy of the patient, and the type of restoration planned for attachment to the fixture. Sometimes when there are multiple implants placed, multi-unit abutments will be attached to the implant fixture to allow a better path of draw and insertion of the final prosthesis as well as distribute and dissipate biting forces from a physics or engineering perspective.

The Implant Crown is generally described as the part that you actually see in the mouth as you chew and smile.

Implant Cementable Crowns

Implant crowns can be connected to the implant abutment and fixture by means of cementation to the abutment or screw-retained.  When the crown can be cemented, the abutment is attached to the fixture first and then the crown will be cemented over top of the abutment, very similar to a natural tooth that is prepped and custom crown (or cap) cemented over top.

Implant Screw-Retained Crowns

Implant screw-retained crowns are retained by screws directly through the crown and connecting abutment into the implant fixture.  The access opening is then covered with another material (similar to fillings) to cover that hole (access opening) and also serves to allow access to the screw in the future if needed.

Implant Overdenture (Implant Retained denture)

Whether you have an existing denture or are choosing to have your remaining teeth extracted, Implant Overdentures are a great option for helping to retain the complete dentures that just can't be glued in or don't seem to stay in as expected.

Implant Fixed Bridge

A fixed bridge can be attached to two or more implant fixtures that are placed in the jaw bone. The connection of the appliance to implants is screw-retained - only your dentist can remove it. And no need to worry about your teeth falling out unexpectedly - because they are screwed in. This lessens the thickness of extra material like that of a traditional denture covering the roof of the mouth or "flange" areas that extend along the gum tissue for retention of the appliance. An implant bridge can be a horse-shoe-designed shape allowing more access of your tongue to your natural anatomy. Cleaning and maintenance of these appliances are very important for longevity. Waterpiks can be very helpful in assisting with cleaning under bridges.

Teeth in the Same Day

Depending on your anatomy, some implant fixtures can be placed and restored on the same day. The day you have your teeth extracted, we have options for you to leave our office with a fixed appliance so you won't have to deal with a removable denture at any time. Not everyone is a candidate, so it is important to schedule a consultation to determine if you can receive our same-day dental implants in Allentown, PA.

A lot of planning and behind-the-scenes work goes into preparing for all of our implant or fixed prosthetic cases.
